Personal Day

This is to announce that Crabby is taking a "personal day" today.

Yep, I'm taking off from the blog in order to fly cross-country on personal business***, so I'm gone, but it's not quite vacation. And I hate hate hate to fly. I'd actually rather be home surfing the web for health news and fielding PR pitches for vitamin water than sitting in an airplane... go figure!

But anyway, it's also a "personal day" in the sense that I did an interview with the nice folks at A Weight Lifted, and they're running it today over at their blog.

Now if you're anything like me, you might have a slight resistance to clicking the link. Because you came HERE, and now I'm sending you SOMEWHERE ELSE for today's post. I know I hate to follow a blogger over to a guest post elsewhere. And I have a cable modem, so it's not even about loading time... it's the principle of the thing! People shouldn't be wandering all over the web making you chase after them, dagnabbit!

Anyway, sorry about that. But if you don't mind clicking over to A Weight Lifted for the Crabby McSlacker interview, they're very nice folks over there and they ask fun questions! Remember Marsha, the Dietitian with Dark Dirty Secrets? That's where she blogs.

And as to my "personal business," it's one of those things that's really interesting if you're the person actually conducting the business, but not so interesting if you're not. But if you're bored this morning and want to know what it is...

***Crabby's Personal Business, Explained:

We might be buying a condo.

See, once upon a time, the Lobster and I had a home in California, in the San Francisco Bay Area. But we sold it and downsized into a condo in Provincetown, Massachusetts--one of our favorite places on earth.

The problem? Winter time. In freezing-ass cold weather, Provincetown is not such a favorite place anymore. It's not only cold but lonely. Almost nothing is open and only a few hardy souls hang around.

We don't do hardy.

We are aware that some people, on contemplating a move from a year-round home to a summer place, might think about winter plans before selling their house. But we decided hey, it's a good time to sell in CA, so what the heck! We'll take it a year at a time.

Last winter we stayed with relatives in the SF Bay Area, and this coming winter it looks like we have a house-sitting arrangement lined up in our old Rockridge neighborhood. Hooray!

But at some point we'd like to have a more permanent winter home. So we're attempting to buy a condo in San Diego where it's warmer than the Bay Area, but still close enough for frequent family visits. We found a place we are very excited about (in Hillcrest, near Balboa Park) and put an offer on it. However, we are planning to rent it out for a year or so until we're sure we can actually afford to live in it.

So I need to fly out and make sure the place is not radioactive, or infested with rats or rattlesnakes, or riddled with toxic mold, or located next to a meth lab or a vampire lair or something.

Be back sometime Wednesday morning. Thanks for your patience!

  1. Oh I used to live in San Diego when my exhusband was in the Navy. LOVED IT!!! The weather is beautiful there. Good luck!

And yeah if you don't like the cold I wouldn't advise staying in New England, especially the winter we had this past winter. YIKES!

  2. Sounds like a wonderful excuse to fly across the country.
Here's hoping you don't find the condo is infested with vermin, or that the neighbours have really strange nocturnal habits. (Take some garlic with you, just in case...)

  3. I'm a Phoenix, Arizona girl. Due to employment, I had to spend 5 years in Chicago...n-n-n-ne-ne-ne-nev-v-v-v-errrrrr g-g-g-g-go b-b-b-baaaa-ck! Long, cold winters there, too, with wind. We had to put full-snow gear on (long underwear, snow pants, down coat, scarf, mittens, hats) just to check the mail...even then we came back with frost around our nostrils.

Now we're in Utah. Much better. We can acutally play in the snow here. Some locals go out in just a t-shirt and shorts. They are called "Utards" though. Tougher than me!

I hope you are wonderfully surprised by your potentially-new condo.

  4. Good luck with the condo. Wish I could afford to move somewhere warm for the winter!

  5. WOW! Congrats! I am in south Orange County about 20 minutes south of Dland so not too far from that proposed home! Hey, buy in my area & I will rent from you! We can't afford anything here!

    Good luck! :-)

  6. Crabby, good for you. I am sure the condo will be just the thing.

  7. Good luck on the condo buying. I'm not a big fan of winter. I hibernate. Winter is nice to visit but not stay in.

If you're looking for a warm place with friendly people and plenty to do ya might want to consider TX. :) Just saying.

  8. I followed your link and you're CUTE!

I too hate it when movies/books inevitably show therapist/client falling into each other's arms. That is loss-of-license-and-livelihood time, not to mention really slimey, but evidently people think it's romantic.

    GL with the condo!

  9. Gina - I feel your Chicago pain, girl! I live in Minnesota.

Cranky - Good luck with the condo!! And enjoy your vacay!

  10. Oooh good luck! I *love* the Balboa Park area! My boyfriend and I go there as often as we can to scope out all the museums! And such a beautiful place to run! :D I hope you buy there!

  11. I hope you're going suitably prepared for all those eventualities!

How posh - having a winter and a summer home! Sounds like a great idea... I'll broach it with the husband.

  12. My only question is: where are your spring and fall homes going to be located?

  13. Love, love, love San Diego!! Next to Phoenix (visiting our daughter) it is my favorite spot.

Daughter went to college in Boston, so we can identify with the coastal winters. UGH!! Iowa is bad, but Boston was worse.

  14. Good luck with the condo! Have fun!

  15. What awesome fun! Hope the condo is in tip-top shape and there are no unpleasant surprises!

  16. AS long as you don't invite the vampires in you should be OK-they can't come in uninvited... :)

Hope it turns out to be a nice place for you to get away to in the cold. I endure stupid cold every winter and the thought of a winter retreat is very tempting indeed...

  17. Good luck!!! Real estate is so exciting. :)

  18. Welcome to the SoCal real estate market! There are some good buys right now, so you should be able to avoid the plummet I have experienced since buying my house in L.A. a few years back. Oh well, I wasn't planning on retirement anytime soon anyway....

  19. Crabby, I hope you have a safe and successful trip. I do agree with Merry, where are the spring and fall homes going to be?

  20. Good luck with the condo! Hillcrest is a great area and Balboa Park is beautiful.

I'm just confused as to how you could leave the Bay Area in the first place!

  21. It's a good thing you're going out there to check the place out...if Joss Whedon has taught me anything, it's that California is positively CRAWLING with vampires! ;)

I hope the new place is what you both want and that it works out well for you! :)

  22. Good luck with a San Diego condo. Weather is wonderful there. (yeah, better than the 510 and much better than NE).

Rockridge. Ya know I will probably be setting up some Boot Camps/ or workout in Oakland.

  23. Oh, Hillcrest is SUCH a cute area! I love San Diego in general, actually. I used to live in Clairemont, off Gennessee and the 163.

If you really DO move down there, I won't be too far! I might come visit! Or you could come visit me, if you'd rather. (If you're nice, I might even help you move. ;D)

  24. How exciting!!!!
I grew up in MA, and lived in the Berkshires for a few years in my early 20's. Then I moved to San Diego, and LOVED it!!!!! Lived in Hillcrest for a while, too. What a GREAT neighborhood! (If "A Taste of Thai is still in business, and you like Thai food, you must go!)
We lived in L.A. for a while, now we're in the Bay Area. But if we couldn't live here, I'd want to live in San Diego again.
(BTW, my brother-in-law and his wife live in La Jolla. If you want to ask them any questions, I can give you their info. Just drop me an email!)

  25. Congratulations, hopefully, on your newish abode.

  26. Good luck with your new winter home, Crabby! I'm sure there won't be any rats, or other varmints to greet you! Hopefully it will serve as a much warmer place for you. I'm with you about the flying thing. I'd rather be doing gardening, or, doing artwork than ever climbing on a plane again. I hate the landing part!

  27. Loved your interview and SUPER EXCITING about the condo. Good luck!

  28. Good luck! I hope it's every bit as wonderful as you'd like it to be! Or, at least comfortable and vampire lare free! :)

  30. Central Mass's arms are always open come wintertime to you and Merry - if you don't mind the occasional ice storm and screeching, howling wind. P-town is so beautiful in the summer tho...too bad it folds up like a cheap beach chair in the fall.

I liked A Weight Lifted site. Seems like a nice place to visit too. Thanks!
