Better Use for Cadbury Creme Eggs

Photo: boozysmurf

Pasta Queen just wrote a great post called "busted" about running into her brother at the grocery store just after she had grabbed a couple of Cadbury Creme Eggs. I don't know that I've tried one of these things, but they do indeed sound delicious. I've been totally craving chocolate lately. Is it just me, or do chocolate cravings seem more pronounced in winter?

Anyway, for those of you with a bit of time to kill, here's an alternative suggestion for what to do should you find yourself in close proximity to a bunch of Cadbury Creme Eggs and don't have a sibling available to stage an intervention.

Warning: some assembly required.

(And if you like these Rube Goldberg type videos, here's one for us vicarious pyromaniacs. Anyone else harbor a secret love of setting things on fire? Personally, I limit myself to candles, fireplace logs, and marshmallows, but if I had a setup like this in the garage...)

As may be obvious, I didn't get the chance to write up a real post for today. Just one of those days when Life got in the way. After almost 2 years of blogging, it has finally occurred to me that rather than stressing about it, I can just remind myself that the world won't come to an end if I miss writing a "real" post every now and then.

And if anyone has a some slightly more practical suggestions for avoiding chocolate flavored temptations, please share! I've been trying to take Dr. Judith Beck's advice and "exercise my resistance muscle," but perhaps I need to do a few more reps and sets.

Have a great Wednesday, everyone, and I hope to have my act together by Friday! (Thank goodness for Merry Sunshine!)

  1. I could barely read past the picture of the d*mn thing! I won't run out and buy one because we're in the middle of an ice storm, but still, I'm eating one in my head. ...sigh...I'll probably gain just thinking about it, won't I?

  2. You are not alone in the winter cravings. And it's not just chocolate, it's carbs and fatty foods and gravy. Oh god. The gravy. For me, I think it's partially that I'm more prone to depression during the winter so I crave things that get me high temporarily.

Also, all the holidays that come with chocolate are during the winter. Thanksgiving, Christmas, Valentine's Day and while Easter isn't technically in winter, it's RIGHT AFTER. And it's sometimes still pretty cold. It is a conspiracy.

  3. I've become one of those annoying chocolate snobs who only likes expensive, fru-fru dark chocolate in crazy flavors like cherry chili. But the cheap stuff tastes really waxy and flavorless in comparison when you get used to the shooting-star taste of the premium stuff, I've found. And in general it seems to take a smaller amount to satisfy a chocolate craving. It's probably just a self-made delusion, but hey - whatever works!

  4. Okay that picture was NOT FAIR first thing in the am. Now I want chocolate. Ridiculously much. Seriously!!!

  5. Fortunately I have to say that ever since I legalized ALL food, I no longer crave cadbury creme eggs or anything else of that nature. It's been one of the mysteries of life for me.... when I thought I wasn't allowed them, well they were all I thought about. Now that I keep a plethora of sweets and chocolates in my deep freeze I hardly ever touch the things. Who would ever have thought that could be the case?

  6. Nolafwug, I know what you mean about the expensive chocolate! I can't do the really super dark 90% type, but I have found that the more expensive imported dark chocolates have ruined my appreciation for the Hersheys and Nestles types that I loved in my youth.

Not that I won't still eat them...

  7. Well, the picture looked like sausage gravy on whole wheat toast to me, so a whole different set of taste buds went on high alert there.

The desire for chocolate is not seasonal; it's a sign I'm alive.

  8. "The desire for chocolate is not seasonal; it's a sign I'm alive." Mary Anne, I'm right there with you! and damn you Crabby....now I want a cabury creme egg..good thing it's snowing like hell in NY. Although I DID make it down to the rowing machine, plus got through half of a fat-girl yoga DVD before the lil one started fussing. Do I deserve a reward? :)

I wish I'd read this post *before* the one about broccoli.. the chocolate craving wiped out the raw broccoli with italian dressing urge!

  10. I'm totally on board with cari from ditch diets. I truly let myself have whatever I want, whenever I want it. I find I don't want it much of the time now. And this from a former binge eater.

  11. I am sooooo grateful that these things turn my stomach.

Mini eggs are entirely different animal, though...

  12. Too late...I had two last weekend...I keep Lindt dark chocolate bars around the house all the time, and I can eat a square or two of those and that's enough...But when I see those Cadbury Cream eggs I just can't seem to stop myself.

I was just thinking yesterday that it's a holiday thing...There are certain things that Husband and I buy when Christmas time rolls around...We eat our fill and I think I've had enough...Then all the Easter chocolate comes out and I've got to have it because it's only around at Easter, right? Gah.

Anyway...Will try to enjoy in moderation and hope that does the trick.

  13. I'm with Marie on this one. Can't stand the creme eggs, but the mini eggs? Totally different story!

  14. Winter is definitely the season I crave comfort foods...potatoes, mac and cheese, etc., etc.
    Spring needs to hurry up!!

  15. Creme eggs, they're like Marmite aren't they. You either love em or hate em.

I love em and have heroically only eaten one so far this year. My tip regarding the cravings for creme eggs - buy a bag of mini creme eggs instead - 50 cals a pop instead of 160. BUT - buy the big bag of minis where they are individually wrapped - if you buy the small bag they are naked, and then you (well - me anyway) eat the lot at once and may as well have had a big one anyway.

  16. Okay, I'm going to have to try one of these. I feel so out of it! It's like when I had to confess to being a Nutella virgin; everyone else in the world seems to have experienced that.

  17. I'm with April... winter makes me extra carby. I blame Thanksgiving. It kicks off the cold weather here and from then on out all I want are KFC sides hehe. Give me some mac & cheese with a side of kit kat - STAT.

And I hear you on the blogging, too. I found myself stressing this week because I was so "behind" with updating mine and reading others then I was like you know, this is silly. I'll post when I can and not wory about when I can't! I love blogging but sometimes it's just too hard to squeeze in!

  18. I'm with Mary Anne: give me sausage gravy.

What about the fire? That totally mesmerized me. So perfect for a snow day.

  19. I love minieggs and I am not that big of a fan of the creme eggs but when you haven't eaten chocolate in awhile I bet it would taste great. The milky way or snickers eggs are fantastic. *sigh*

And I wonder why I have a sugar addiction? LOL

  20. I too love Mini Eggs and am not a fan of creme eggs. I find creme eggs really sweet. I wish that when I had to do that same science fair project we got to use creme eggs instead of hard boiled real ones. It would have smelt a lot better.

  21. here in snowy montana.. i'm craving oatmeal... of any variety... more grainy stuff rather than chocy... but that'll be for easter.. if it warms up enough to get out...:)

  22. good G-D I LOVE THOSE EGGS!

    and their fake yolk.
and I need a Merry Sunshine.

    and some chocolate.

    STAT.

  23. Oh man my mouth is watering! I can't believe it is THAT time again. Anyone who disposes of a creme egg should be harshly reprimanded.

    MMM, mmm good!

  24. My kids love those! And they have caramel and I think PB now too! I say don't avoid, just share ;)

  25. How is this not a real post? You're always entertaining no matter the content. Don't care for the cream eggs.. but I second nolafwug on that dark chocolate snobbery.

  26. OMG, I LOVE THOSE EGGS!!! Good thing I'm too lazy to go to the store today...and I'm counting on my short-term memory to forget about them by the next time I'm at the store.

  27. HOLD THE PHONE!! I thought they were only available at Easter time?! Are they on the shelves now?

    must have an egg...like now....

  28. Oh, I wish I had some better ideas re: chocolate. I fell into the cadbury egg trap today. I am so in the middle of the winter blahs!

Just wanted to stop in and say hi. I love your blog!

  29. Those machines are great.

But the eggs? Seriously...don't bother. They are a giant goop of sugary blech. WAY too sweet. Stick to the posh dark choclate filled yummy kinds. Gotta make the chocolate count :) I worked in a chocolate factory one summer...put me off chocolate for a while, and now it's only the good stuff.

But then I am biased. I don't crave sweet, I crave salt...

Complete random aside - Cadbury tried to market vampire halloween cadbury eggs...I have enough trouble with the bunny egg thing...I can't let them drag halloween into it :)

  30. LOL!! Very funny stuff!! I went through a chocolate covered cherry phase, but with the proper therapy, I moved passed it :-)

  31. Can't stand the creme eggs...yuck! The mini eggs on the other hand - look out waist!

I love contraptions like that, thanks for the videos.

  32. I have a fool-proof method for avoiding Cadbury creme eggs: move to Mexico, that's what I did! Thanks for reading (and posting a comment) on my blog, Crabby

  33. They're a little too sweet for me. But chocolate cravings are definitely more pronounced in the winter!

  34. I have a love/hate relationship with those eggs. I love the creamy filling and hate the taste of the chocolate. What gives?

My favorite is the Hershy's Robin's Eggs...I haven't had them in years because I'm (usually) still dieting on Easter. I can't have ANY because I can't eat just one.

    Thanks for the funny video!

  35. I used to work for Cadburys, I git free chocolate, can't eat it any more, and it explains what I am doing on a fitness website as well
