Anyone else feeling a bit slow this fine Friday? It's a good thing Research Nancy found some health benefits of coffee yesterday because I am definitely snorfing up a big ol' pot of it this morning. If anyone else is spinning their wheels a bit, how 'bout distracting yourself with a few random links before getting down to business?
And an update for those of you who have been kind enough to inquire: Actually, I'm feeling much, much better in these last couple of days! I've gotten back 90% of my energy, ditched the headaches, and reduced the coughing considerably.
However, my lungs still seem to have a fair amount of muck in there and it still hurts like hell when I do cough. Which means I feel like have to take a pass on cardio, other than walking around, until normal respiratory function resumes. This is not a wonderful as it sounds! I get kinda cranky when I can't run around a little.
I'll give it through the weekend to improve, then it might be time to check in with an actual physician. And as to the cold vs flu question: I'm firmly convinced flu. Because otherwise I'd feel like a total ass for dragging this out so long.
(On the plus side: my voice is kinda low and sexy now! I think if I were ever gonna try to cover any Melissa Etheridge tunes on a wild night at karaoke, this would be my week).
Somebody Bring Me Some Water! And some Mucinex and Advil and tea...

FitBloggin' Conference Registration Opens Up Tomorrow
Any other bloggers out there thinking of going to FitBloggin' 2014? It's June 26-29th in Savannah.
I've never gone to a blog conference before, but I've decided this is the year! So I will be attending...though I don't know if this makes the event more or less appealing if you're considering it.
Food Blog Comment Rage:
I mentioned this on Facebook, for all two of you who actually see posts that appear there, but again, I really enjoyed Shauna's Reid's blog post on the crazy-making way people comment on food blogger's recipes. And yet again, it makes me so grateful for the kind and sensible Cranketeers!
Weirdly Poignant Mirrors:
This has nothing to do with fitness, and got picked up by HuffPo so many of you have probably seen it already, but there is a blog devoted in its entirety to pictures of mirrors found on Craigslist.
Seriously.
And... it's pretty cool if you like that sort of thing. Which, unbeknownst to myself, I turns out I do.
Weight Tracking App with Attitude:
While I wouldn't want one myself, this app cracked me up:
This Week in Weird Web Searches
And finally... I couldn't translate the query from whatever foreign language it was written in, but apparently someone used google images to find my blog via this shot:
How weird is it to discover someone has googled your ass? (Note: copying the photo again off the up to my ass in whey powder post seems to have degraded it in some weird way. Now it looks like I'd literally been sitting around in a pile of whey, leaving much of it stuck to my rear. Sigh.)
How's your Friday going? Any thoughts on anything or plans for the weekend?
I'm in catch up mode and see that you've not been well but are on the mend. I'm glad you're feeling better.. the flu can certainly take its toll.
ReplyDeleteAs for the weekend, we're expecting company for the Super Bowl but we're also expecting a snowstorm so the first expectation might not happen after all. I hope yours is a great one.
Snowstorms fortunately rare in San Diego Hilary, but hope if you get one you stay warm and cozy!
DeleteOne thing that drives me nuts about being sick? While I'm sick, I'm thinking about how good it will feel when I get better, and I'll clean this room! And I'll finish that back-burnered work project! And I'll sort out that billing mistake! And I'll start running again -- it will feel so good! Then I get better and all the determination I was sure I'd have just slips away. Sigh.
ReplyDeleteStill, it's better to get better. Well done!
Ah yes, Trabb's boy, I'm noticing all the to-do list things I thought I'd soon tackle are not looking any more appealing than they were BEFORE I got sick. Funny, that. :)
DeleteOh, I recognize that: When I Get Better Syndrome.
DeleteMary Anne in Kentucky
And now I wonder if I am a fan of Cranky Fitness on FB. I am not sure! I hate hate HATE reading through food blog comments for that same reason. Could I substitute this? Will it work with that? I love the bloggers who are honest enough to say "I don't know, but if you try it let us know!"
ReplyDeleteOtF, even people who have "liked" it rarely have the posts appear on the feed, FB wants people with non-personal pages to PAY to have em show up. I think you have to hover over something and make it an "interest" or interact with it a lot to ever see anything!
DeleteMany health bloggers just use their personal FB page, but I'm afraid if I combine self with blogging, I'll never see old IRL pals who rarely post as all the fitness blog updates go scrolling by. Even the few I accepted as friends before deciding to stop that seem to clog up my feed. But I can't comment on their posts as Cranky Fitness because I'm not a personal page.. it's really stupid.
Have I mentioned I hate facebook? :)
Yeah, I have an OtF facebook page, and I'll post something, and my stats will show like 15 people saw it. Drives me nuts! I have a "healthy living" interests list for all the blogs and health-related brands I like, and an "entertainment/media" interests list for some of the famous people/podcasts/etc. that I follow. It's amazing how much shows up on that list that I never saw in my feed. :: shakes fist at Facebook ::
DeleteGlad you're feeling better, Crabby! Hopefully that cough will go away soon and you'll be able to run again. I feel the same way about not being able to go to the gym; it'd drive me nuts.
ReplyDeleteThat Carrot app looks hilarious and I'm sad that they don't have an Android version with which to play. The GladOS type voice is awesome. I wonder if you can get it to call you a Cranky Meatbag? :-D
Friday's going okay. Got some grocery shopping done and have been otherwise breathtakingly unproductive. My brain is just tired, so some vegetating is in order this weekend.
Ooh, Cranky Meatbag, I love it Heather!
DeleteAnd I"m fond of the robot voice too. At one point I created a Cranky Fitness cartoon via a site that sounded like that, and it was a blast! Seems to not be there anymore, alas.
Would love to find another one sometime... 'cause what I need is another enormous time suck!
And some times breathtakingly unprodective is just what the doctor ordered!
There seems to be a correlation between fun factor and enormous time sucks. Someone should science that.
DeleteSadly, I'll continue to be unproductive today. I performed a spectacular faceplant in my yard earlier and earned my first ankle sprain, so I've been banished to the couch with the cats. It's 63 degrees here, so I can't even blame the weather. Funny that I mentioned not being able to get to the gym making me nuts; we'll find out now! :-P
HAHA! Nobody wants to see my ass!
ReplyDeleteSOrry you are still feeling sick. I'm telling you....Oscillo, stock up on it and take it at the first sign of feeling oogy. It will be the best investment you make. Nobody believes me though, I feel like Boiron should pay me for my endorsement of their products. LOL
My weekend is busy, Saturday at the crack of ass I have a hair appointment, 1 I have to go to one of those ridiculous "Partylite" home parties, but I can't really complain I sell Pampered Chef so I guess I have to attend a party once in awhile....and then I'm going out with a friend for a much needed girls night out for a little chinese food and talking.
Sunday is the Super Bowl and quite frankly I'm bitter and don't want to watch it, so I think I'm going to attempt to clean the house and get into a little organizing.
Your Oscillo advice has not fallen on deaf ears SB! Too late at this point, but will be sure to have some on hand.
DeleteBTW, Pampered Chef makes the garlic press I adore, one that actually crushes the f-ck out of garlic without even needing to peel it, and has a handy thingy to clean it with that actually attaches to the inside of the press so you don't lose it. So I have a soft spot for them.
And once the 49ers got knocked out I lost all interest in the superbowl. I gotta think of something that's normally crowded to go do during those hours!
I should have had another cup before sitting down to my computer, because I read that as, “snorfing up a bag of pot”, and thought “that’s probably not going to help” and “it certainly doesn’t sound like Crabby”. You’ll have to forgive me because marijuana, and the Broncos, is all that is in the news here in beautiful Colorado.
ReplyDeleteLynM
Too funny Lyn!
DeleteBut heck, if snorfing up a bag of pot would help... thought I'm thinking SMOKING it would be kinda counterproductive on the lung thing.
I mostly missed the whole pot thing in my youth due to my own neuroticism and paranoia--totally freaked out when I tried it. However, a few random encounters in midlife that were not unpleasant have me thinking, if it were easily obtainable, it might be worth playing around with at some point. But probably not before breakfast!
hi crabby! get better soon! looove the app but also cant download it on my android.. how cool that you will be at fitblogging. every year i stalk all the Blogs which talk about it. make sure to let us be part of the fun.
ReplyDeletealso: yes to strong coffee in high doses!
stop barking and Keep writing! ;)
Puja, I don't think it really does much other than record your weight and then yell at you, so you're probably not missing much, but at least it has a sense of humor!
DeleteAh, food blog comments. Why is it all taken so personally by the commenters?
ReplyDeleteMeanwhile, I am glad you are feeling better. Have you considered using essential oils? It might keep the doctor away.
Happy Year of the Horse, Crabby. In celebration husband and I have evil plans to go out for Chinese food if we can. He's got a long day of snowploughing and we're both fighting colds, thus my essential oil suggestion.
That's something for me to look into Leah! I feel like I need to inhale something both soothing and kick-ass enough to stir up some of this gunk so I can get rid of it. Any suggestions on specifics, if you end up popping in again at some point? I felt my best in a steamy hot shower this morning, but no oils were involved...
DeleteMay I suggest, Peppermint, Lemon Balm, Eucalyptus, Lavendin, Juniperberry, Cinnamon.
DeleteLook them up and sort out what strikes you. I've used Lavendin rubbed on my throat at the hollow in the mornings. Euc. or Juniper added to a hot bath is more than pleasant. Do not put mint in the tub. Ever. Don't. Inhale the oils. Some can be rubbed on body, but usually require a carrier oil such as olive or coconut. I have used some of these straight from the bottle w/o a carrier, but that's me. Do not do that.
Cautions and Warnings: YMMV. Hold hands when you cross the street. Don't take any wooden coins. Get plenty of fluids.
Thank you leah!
DeleteSo happy you are feeling better!!! This flu thing can take a couple weeks or more to get past so don't let it fool you & be careful. Just when you think you are better, it attacks again - I had it last year & know many with it this year - UGH!!!!
ReplyDeleteHUGE HUGS for sharing my giveaway!!!!! Love to you!
OMG on the butt pic - cracked me up but who doesn't like to look at a butt & especially one with a Melissa Etheridge voice. ;)
No FitBloggin money here so enjoy & I will be jealous of you all. :)
I am so happy I am not a food blogger & make it know any time post a pic of my food that I don't care how it looks as long as it tastes good. :) People are really weird with comments!
Oh, BTW, I am drinking coffee! :)
You always seem to score interesting giveaways jody, happy to share! And yeah, I've held off from conferences because of $$, hoping some how to score some sort of sponsorship but I think maybe one has to actively seek them out and that wishful thinking alone doesn't make them happen? Sigh. But this year I decided to just pony up.
DeleteThis weekend is a bit of school, celebration of my mother's birthday on Saturday and then Super Bowl Sunday. I am going to make stuffed baked potatoes that look like little footballs. I will not be posting pics on my blog. LOL!
ReplyDeleteWe are moving in February, so I guess I should start thinking about getting ready for that too. The arrangements are made, just have to get rid of things and then pack.
Thanks for sharing all the interesting stuff that you share...you never know what you are going to find for the Cranketeers!
So happy that you continue to feel better!!! Enjoy the weekend!
Oh shoot, no pics of football shaped spuds? Dang! But sounds very festive. Have a great weekend!
DeleteIt will come as NO SURPRISE WHATSOEVER to those who know me that I have a copy of the Carrot weight tracker app. I already had the to-do list (which is awesome and gives you a pet cat and then does mean things to it, but I dropped out of using it because I need a more utilitarian list of to-dos) and the alarm clock (yeah, phones and alarms and me ... I need an actual CLOCK alarm).
ReplyDeleteThe Carrot fitness one is just a weight tracker, and it (currently) won't even integrate automatically with my scale, but I still couldn't resist. I wish it did electronically integrate, because I have the feeling I'm going to be a chicken about entering when the weight goes up. (I'm a daily weigher, so I'm always up and down). So far I'm only two days in (put in starting weight yesterday, and then today's weight).
Totally redundant for me in terms of utility, but high on fun factor. I like that my little fat avatar does lunges and side planks and pushups.
Glad you're feeling better!
Thanks Rachel, good to get the skinny (so to speak) on the Carrot App and omg, that to-do list thing sounds totally crazy! Cat torture would indeed be motivating but yikes.
DeleteI'm so glad you are feeling better!!
ReplyDeleteMy Friday was mostly eaten up with a run but now I'm plopped with my legs up and laptop out (for the rest of the day!!!) - so that's a good thing!!
I stil can not believe you just go for 37 mile runs like that is a normal thing to do during the course of a day. You are incredible Kim!
DeleteAnd along the lines of missing any possible point/s of the blog whatsoever.... Am I the only one who notice the MONGO size of that steak on the grill? It's almost half the size of "junior" standing next dad! And the connection between all that and the coffee still eludes me - especially since those are two different fellows. Crabby - you should have a caption contest for that one!
ReplyDeleteAnon
OMG, good catch anon, that is a HUGE steak, how weird! I'm guessing that's the figurative representation of his "coffee hunger?" Like a crap cup of instant is any sort of steak equivalent.in the coffee realm.
DeleteMy cold came back today and I took the day off work. Maybe I have a new cold. That would be 3 colds since Christmas. I slept all day and now I feel 80% so maybe it was just a last blast from the cold I defeated last weekend. I have stuff to do I can't be getting sick all the time.
ReplyDeleteThe minimum I am doing this weekend is getting some new swim fins that fit now that I have found a big swimmer's warehouse store in the next city over and I have to try out the new Pilates class at my gym. Everything else except maybe laundry can wait!
Oh shoot CIndy 3 colds since Christmas? That sucks!!!! Hope you feel better soon!
DeleteFriday i got to have an adventure. This weekend, well, i'll be doing taxes for Brother-in-Law, The Mouth, because he can't figure out the forms even though he's single and takes the standard deduction.
ReplyDeleteThats generous of you messymimi! Maybe you could tell the Mouth you're married with kids and can't figure out how to get the house spotless? A little quid pro quo...
DeleteGlad you are improving; do be careful not to convince yourself you're well-er than you really are. Cardio lust can be dangerous.
ReplyDeleteMary Anne in Kentucky
Wise words, Mary Anne!
DeleteA Whiny Update
ReplyDeleteI won't bore everyone with a whole new post on this, but sure enough, saying I felt better on the blog was a majorly stupid move--as some of you noted, this thing can come sneaking right back and that's exactly what happened. Fever went back up to over 101 again yesterday, though Advil squelched it again and I'm waiting to see what today brings.
But I figure if leave a grumbling report of feeling crappy again, perhaps it will will work in the opposite direction and I'll feel much better again. Fingers crossed!
Thanks everyone so much for keeping me encouraged and entertained!
If your lungs are not clearing, you need to get treated because you can get pneumonia if you don't already have it.
DeleteThis should work since obviously your germs are intelligent enough to read your blog.
ReplyDeleteMary Anne in Kentucky
I have been sick too, and am about where you are. My headache has mellowed a little, energy is probably not to 90%, but I can tell I am getting better because I got my appetite back..lol Hope you get rest over the weekend!!!
ReplyDeleteHope you're feeling better Leslie and thanks for the encouraging words!
DeleteOh, glad you are better/sorry you are worse again/driving me crazy not to be able to catch up. I am in and out of internet & cell phone range for the next week or so. We came into town to make an airport run (husband's sister is joining us) but will head back to remote places tomorrow morning. So- I'll be sending you all sorts of positive thoughts from a very nice, warm place. But I don't want to make you - or anyone dealing with the cold, cold weather in so much of the country - feel worse, so I won't spend any time talking about where I am just now. -DRG
ReplyDeleteDRG, sorry I missed you but I received those positive thoughts and really appreciated them! And actually, I'm in San Diego so can't complain about the weather. Oh wait, yes I can... it's been COLD the last couple days, by which I mean high 50s and low 60s. The flu has me so temperature sensitive I wore a down coat to go to whole foods and was still freezing! Sigh.
DeleteHave fun with your remote riding!!!
YAY!! will you be at FITBLOGGIN???
ReplyDeletewill I see you sooner than that??
#allthat :-)
Yes! And maybe Yes!
DeleteSo ya, I am SERIOUSLY loving the feel of the blog. You izz trailblazing & pioneering. Oh yes you are's.
ReplyDeleteYum Yucky, coming from you that is quite a compliment as I think YOU are the queen of trailblazing & pioneering. And Cake Kabobs. I still wish I'd thought of that one.
