Best Weight Loss Blog Update: Nominate Your Favorites and Win Prizes!

Do you have a favorite weight loss or fitness blog and feel it deserves some recognition?

Would you like to win one of several lovely giveaway prizes for yourself and possibly your favorite blogger?

Yep, as threatened promised many months ago, it's time to update the musty old Best Weight Loss Blog list that Cranky Fitness readers compiled back in 2009. Weirdly enough, the thing remains an extremely popular destination for googlers on the web! Yet I feel terrible knowing hundreds and hundreds of poor innocent folks arrive here every day looking to find the best weight loss blogs... and instead find themselves wading through a bunch of abandoned blogs and broken links.

(Oh, and another favor I have of readers: I'm on the hunt for affordable web development help and looking for advice!)

So here's the scoop:

The Best Weight Loss Blogs-- 2012 Edition:

Quick summary, for those in a hurry:

Get To The Freakin' Point for Once, Crabby!

 1.  Vote for up to 10 of your favorite weight loss blogs in the comments below. Define "weight loss blog" however the hell you want.  You could win something for doing this.

2.  Don't wait forever; nominations will close in a couple weeks or so to allow time to evaluate and compile winning blogs.

3. Best blogs and reader giveaway winners will be announced on March 26 to allow me to compile results.

4.  If you don't check back later, you could lose out on a prize you won.

Longer FAQ Version, For Those Avoiding Actual Work:

1. So Just What Are the Fabulous Prizes?

OK, so here's the funny part... I don't know yet!

My guess is there will be a thing or two that is Big and quite a few other prizes that are Smallish.

For some unknown and illogical reason, I suddenly decided NOW, RIGHT THIS MINUTE was the time to have this thing... just after I'd said "no" to about a million product review pitches.  However, several great possibilities for prizes arrived in my inbox just hours after I decided to do this, and I suspect I can drum up other stuff over the next few weeks.  Worst case, I'll re-purpose products and books etc that I already have, pay for a few new things and hope the Lobster is not reading this sentence, as well as do a lot of unattractive behind the scenes groveling to round up prizes. But wouldn't it be fantastic if sponsors with vaguely health/fitness related stuff were to spontaneously offer up their very fine wares or services in exchange for the chance to inform Cranky Fitness readers of their incredible benefits?

2. How Will The Top Blogs Be Chosen?

Reader nominations will be counted, plus, unlike last time, I get to nominate and vote too. And I'm not capped at 10 because hell, it's my blog.  Many great and popular blogs got left off last time because people assumed of course someone else would nominate them, and I don't want that to happen again.   There are also some prior nominations from an earlier post; see below if you give a crap.

At the end there may be a runoff of some sort, especially if there turns out to be a good prize for the blog winner.  Or if I get lazy, we may just leave it as a big-ass list with the highest vote-getters on top.

3. Why Would A Well Written and Popular Weight Loss Blog Give a Shit What Cranky Fitness Readers Have to Say?

For whatever weird reason, the old Cranky Fitness poll brings in tons of new readers googling to find weight loss blogs.  Blogs that end up high on the list get clicked on a lot, and not only does this bring them direct traffic, I believe it helps the blog's search engine rankings. The new 2012 poll will take a little while to build up the same awesome powers, but it will be greatly aided by the drastically edited old version directing people straight to the new post.  I even feel comfortable saying I PROMISE that top ranked blogs will eventually get a lot of new readers from this silly thing, especially if they are small blogs right now.

Plus I'm hoping to have a nice prize for the top weight loss blog.

And hey, remember how a few months Crabby went scrambling around debasing herself in order to hustle up votes when she got nominated as one of Shape Magazine's Best Fitness Bloggers?  Well, that's because she herself likes the new readers that popularity contests can bring.

4. What Can I Do to Increase My Chances of Winning a Prize?

Prizes will be chosen semi-randomly. Some randomness will be definitely be involved, but preference will be given to entrants who:
  •  leave nominations complete with blog names and urls to make compiling easier;
  •  mention this contest to others (and let me know via comment or email that you've done so); or
  •  are nice humans who aren't spammers or folks just stopping by to nominate their own blogs and no one else's (although you're quite welcome to do so).

5. How Can I Rig This Thing To Make MY Favorite Blog Rank Higher?

 Image swiped from here.

Besides nominating your favorite blog, you can tell me and others WHY it's awesome so we may want to vote for it too.  You can also go to the blog itself and let the blogger and/or the readers know about the nomination, so that those who would like to see the blog get more reader and SEO recognition can help it out.

6. Wait, This All Sounds Vaguely Familiar...

Yep, if you were here over the summer when Cranky Fitness first emerged from its slumber (the blog was pretty much abandoned for about a year and a half) and you voted in the pre-poll, those votes and nominations will definitely be counted as explained earlier.  However, to be eligible to win a giveaway prize this round, please comment and vote again.  And yes, this means the early birds get two worms!

Another Reader Blog Poll You May Want to Check Out

Tim at A Daring Adventure, who like Crabby is also a Life Coach and GoogleWhore, has just compiled a list of the 20 of the Greatest Self-Improvement Posts Ever Written.  A great resource, and if you're still avoiding actual work, go check 'em out.

And Now, Crabby's Desperate Plea for Web Help:

It's time.  I'd really like to move Cranky Fitness and my coaching website to a new blogging platform without losing readers!  I'd also like to upgrade the look a bit, learn enough to be able to tweak things myself once it's up, and maybe even get some graphics help on headers and banner ads.  I'm eyeing the Wordpress Thesis theme but don't know anything about how wordpress works.

The thing is, I need affordable help, and could offer a little bit of money and a LOT of promotional exposure for someone who knows their way around blog transfer & set up, and who might be looking to expand their web design business.  An on-going banner ad, a blog post all about the amazing transformation, some carefully crafted SEO key-word rich endorsements... you get the idea.

Anyone know of someone who might fit the bill?  Please email me at crabbymcslacker at g mail dot com.

So, what are some of your favorite Weight Loss Blogs?  And thanks, awesome readers, for all your help, past present and future!

  1. Oh hey, and bonus points towards the giveaway for any reader who can guess the reason I chose the particular trophy featured in the top picture--it's not a random selection!

And thanks anyway Leah, always love to see you here.

  2. I really like these three blogs: Carb Tripper, Tippy Toe Diet and Sheese.

I enjoy the creativity Anne at Carb Tripper employs to tell the story of her approach to weigh loss and fitness. She posts song lyrics, photos & her own drawings. Some fun energy there.

Cammy at Tippy Toe Diet has a great sense of humor and is always trying new things as she maintains her 100+ weight loss. I like how she manages to make weight maintenance interesting. And, without navel gazing. She always finds good info to share via links.

Merry at Sheese is a good writer. She writes concisely and with humor about the challenges involved with weight loss while balancing the demands of a job. She finds the best quotes and her random Hugh Jackman photos are pretty nifty too.

All three of these blogs appeal to me because they are not self promotional at all (look at me, look at my video, buy my product(s)!)

  3. Generally speaking I am finding I don't enjoy the true weight loss blogs. Suddenly I find myself fixating on problems I either don't really have, don't really care about, or never knew I should worry about...

I do not have this problem with all my quilting and knitting and dog blogs which I spend far more time on. :)

Anyway, for me, I guess I look to the more balanced "health" blogs and lately with a slant towards recipes. Here is goes: (she also has a project called Operation Beautiful. She seems to want to focus on the beauty and health from the inside-out) (She seems to have a healthy outlook on life and food. Although gets beat up pretty bad by comments sometimes. I have learned a ton of recipe tips on her site and she is very much like me in the fats and foods department) (I have a mixed relationship with this site, but have got good information from the recipes)

    Enjoy. :)

  4. Awesome, some great nominations already!

  5. So besides of course my own blog. HA! I like you of course.

The top 10 I read are

    Cranky Fitness
    Carbie Girl
    Fat to Fit Mommy
    Runs for Cookies
Iowa Girl Eats (excellent lower calorie recipes)
    Coach Vance, TrainingBible Coaching
    Beth's Journey
    Flab Mountain-From Cow to Wow
Fat Girl in a Skinny World
    Carb Tripper

I put the links in case you hadn't heard of them.

I used to love FitnessFixation but they haven't written a post in a year. I do read FitBottomedGirls but lately it seems it's all about selling something, and its not what I read the fitness blogs for.
I still read it, but less and less.

The image is the Lipton Cup which is on display in Provincetown where you spend your summers? Did I guess wrong?

  6. Love your nominations starving bitch, and yes, you're right on the Lipton cup trophy. It is indeed on display in Provincetown where I spend half the year! There is one further twist, but you'd probably have to be a longtime reader to catch it and you got the main idea.

  7. I won't be afraid to nominate myself as well as a few others that I really enjoy.

    My blog (
General health information and *hopefully* motivating content in attempt to encourage my readers to become more physically active. It's relatively new, so there isn't a ton of content, but I am to only write posts with substance instead of spewing words just to get a post.

    Running with Perseverance (
I'm a runner, so it fits. Plus I like her willingness to discuss her Christian faith.

Strong is the New Skinny (
Too many women (my wife and many clients as well) are so caught up with their number on the scale, that they loose sight of what is truly important-being health and strong inside and out. She puts that into perspective in a really honest way.

    Ugly Finish (
Ugly finish is another running blog, but written by someone who isn't superhuman fast. Therefore, she is able to connect with most runners who are out there and are just as happy to finish a race or a workout as they are to run for a desired time.

And of course, love your blog too Cranky.

  8. So, I know this really awesome chick who has a super awesome blog, but TOTALLY SUCKS A BIG FAT ROTTEN ONE when it comes to updates. She's a smartass, reviews a few things, has a ton of life stuff going on and still manages to waste most of her "spare time" (if you can even call it that) tweeting and facebooking to beat the band. None of her tweets really matter to most people and her FB updates are usually bull about her family and how awesome she thinks she is. While some may read a few things and think she's a bit conceited, it's actually just a touch of pride she once lacked due to an 11 year stint as a GED holder, wife and stay at home mom.
She writes about her success, her family, trials and failures, and once in a while she actually has something useful to say. You should go check her out, even though it's been 2 months since she updated. And from what I hear, she's actually planning to update in the next day or so.
She has links to other bloggers there that have huge inspiration on her journey to be even more awesome and bad ass (as if THAT shit was even possible) all the while attempting to be healthier and stronger. I also hear she won a super awesome suspension trainer from you, Crabby. LOL Oh, AND her sassy self was featured on another blog for her weight loss success and doing it on her own...
OK, so it's shameless self-promo, but I am totally updating and I do think I'm at least 1/2 as awesome as I sounded up ^ there.

  9. I could be your scientific advisor. Other than that I've got nothing...sorry :)

I haven't got a nomination, but just thought I'd say hi.

    Hi :)

  10. Crabby!

Perhaps Vered would be a good person for you to contact.

  11. Several I follow religiously are:

Wishing you all the best :)

  12. So many out there!!! I could write a book! I will include me & you of course!:-)

Course I had to add me. I am coming back with more but wanted to get started! :-)

All these ladies above speak from the heart & are amazing people just in general - they appeal to so many! Dr. J - he tells it like it is!

  13. I like the following:

    Nerd Fitness
There are some really inspiring posts on this blog.

    Keeping the Pounds Off
Some great insights into weight maintenance

And if we are allowed to include fitness blogs:
    The Great Fitness Experiment
Not weight loss per se, but fitness, body image, and keeping healthy.

  14. More great suggestions, I really appreciate these, thanks!!

  15. I don't read any weight loss blogs, not being interested, and the only two fitness blogs I read are you and Mizfit. I'll just shuffle off into the corner here and wait to see what comes up.

    Mary Anne in Kentucky

  16. P.S. I just realized I read Merry's Sheesh, which I don't think of as either a weight loss OR an exercise blog, but rather an accountability blog. Hmmm.

    Mary Anne in Kentucky

  17. I'd nominate this versatile blog <a href=">BEAUTY-HIVE</a>.

  18. Crabby? You giving away another Lipton bike? (A girl can dream -- or maybe the word I'm looking for is Hallucinate.)

And I am stealing Mary Anne in K's phrase - accountability blog is a good description.

A lot of the weight loss blogs that I enjoy have really morphed into fitness & weight maintenance blogs -- do they still belong on this list? I'll throw them out anyway.

Shelley's blog My Journey to Fit

    Happy Texans

And of course the Tippy Toe Diet

  19. I might be a bit biased but I really like my blog :)

  20. I follow, which isn't really a blog though individuals can post on the forum or on their own blog-like page. I affectionately refer to MFP as My Fat People :-) That said, it has helped me lose 40lbs.

I also follow Nerd Fitness at

The image at the top of the post is the 1907 Lipton cup, won by a Provincetown schooner, the Rose Dorothea. The cup was "lost" for 99 years, discovered in a vault in the town hall in 2006. The cup is on display in the Provincetown Public Library. Why you chose this trophy? I'd guess it's because the 100 year anniversary of Provincetown winning the cup is the same year you started your blog.

  21. I suppose leaving my correct URL would help...

  22. Thanks for compiling this list. Some really great blogs here.

  23. I don't know exactly what is the greatest blog for losing weight fast, but seems pretty good. It also gives advice on healthy food.

  24. Holy crap I'm nominated! I never get mentioned for these things! Thanks, Merry!!!

Some of my "can't miss" bloggers are:

Helen at Doing a 180 - she's persevered through some health issues and finally figured out what works for her...and is DOING it, which is huge in my book.

Debby at Debby Weighs In - she lost 100 pounds and is maintaining 80 of that...she goes to the gym, takes her giant dog on regular 3 mile walks, and best of all, is forgiving and accepting of herself and where she regarding her maintenance.

I'm sure there are more but as usual, my brain is not completely engaged this morning. And like I said in an email to a friend, if this is what I'm like now, well, I pity my future caretakers!

  25. One of my favorites is:

Gives lots of real life and do-able ideas, recipes, information, etc.

    Motivating and yet still realistic.

  26. Well as you requested it in today's post I will leave the name of my own blog :)

I'm Sarah and blog about home cooking, weight maintenance and healthy lifestyle at hyyp://

I will also add Eden Eats Everything
She's more of a recovering ED'er - but you will love her quirky sense of humour.

  27. Obviously those yy's should have been tt's!

  28. DK Fitsolutions! Besides the fact that my husband writes it and it's really the only blog that I read consistantly, it really does give me the motivation that I need to get moving every day.

  29. Oh goody, more great blogs to check out, thanks you guys!!!

  30. I am adding some new blogs to my personal reading list from all the suggestions from your readers! A few I do read now and really enjoy is:

  31. My favorite is - Has some down to earth information and suggestions. He always tells it like it is and shows how things should be done.
    (with explainations and pictures)

  32. dkfitsolutions get's my vote too!

  33. Besides Cranky Fitness, this is one of my favorites:

I look forward to checking out some of the other recommendations.

  34. Oh, well, if we can broaden the category to more fitness-centric blogs:

    Journey to Fitville

    The Skinny Chronicles

    Goals for the week

  35. The weight-loss blog that I go back to again and again is: "A Weight Lifted" - ~ the perspective is never heavy-handed (uh, no pun intended there, LoL!) but kind... it is so resourceful, I find myself seeking out links and other resources on whatever the topic happens to be. Nothing gimmick-y, just good honest conversation about the struggles so, so many woman are facing. "A Weight Lifted" on the site rocks! ~ Rachel

  36. Hey, just a heads up, that chick I said was a slack ass when it came to posting, totally posted another updated entry. You should take a look. From what I hear, she's posting another one within a few days.

  37. Hi - I'm shamelessly nominating my blog here! "The Health Guru" -

This blog is targeted at readers in South East Asia. There is such a dramatic 'eat, eat, eat' culture in this region and sadly, for most parts revolves around cheap and nasty eats loaded with cheap and nasty carbs and fat. (The local food provided for between USD$3-4 has similar fat, sugar and carb content to Big Mac Meal - eeek!)

The Health Guru provides practical advice and tips on how to eat healthy but still manage your budget and more importantly, it highlights the damaging health affects eat unhealthy food has on our bodies.

I throw in tips on healthy recipes, exercise, research findings, health gossip, personal confessions and general inspiration on how to choose a healthy lifestyle.

Just changing and inspiring one persons life is a job well done for me.

  38. Seriously very great blogs

  39. Exercise makes you feel better about yourself and also gives you goals to pursue. All you need to have is a good workout understanding of exercise and the way it affects your body in order to get the most of it. There is only one ideal way to benefit from weight exercise – Keep It Simple. Yoga provides fitness to the body.for more info visit :

  40. I'm very excited about checking out all the blogs but my favorite is Runs for Cookies

She has lost 125 lbs and is maintaining. But it's so everyday person, not some food and exercise nazi that I can't relate to. I <3 her!

  41. I nominate my blog: The blog is about how I lost weight without dieting & how I kept it off! And w/o dieting, I mean: no counting calories, no pills, no drinks, no surgeries, no injections, no guru diets, etc.

I'm the type of person that didn't do journals, weigh-ins, etc. My goal is to communicate what I did & how I did it so others can try the same thing and get hopefully get similar results!

  42. Cranky herself just told me that I needed to nominate my blog, which is And like those old E.F. Hutton commercials, when she speaks, I listen. I've maintained a healthy, 50 pound weight loss for 20 years now and blog about weight loss and maintenance topics. And yeah, I'd like a trophy for it too. As long as it isn't made of chocolate and received when I have PMS...thanks!

  43. Carb Tripper
    Loretta's Journey
    Diet Schmiet
    Fit to the Finish
    KCL Anderson
    Tippy Toe Diet
    Waisting Time
    A Life Changing Journey

These are my main go to's
and well I guess I will nominate myself...
    Big Girl Bombshell

and the trophy...the Tea Dance, Where you got married and maybe because it represents a clean sweep!

  44. Did I say Truth2BeingFit - :-)

Hey, at 54,5 years old & been doing this for over 30 years - kept the weight off since I was basically 17.. yes, with some little ups & downs but I never put back on the 40 pounds I lost.. I did maybe put on & off 8 pounds in college but in general since my 20's, have been stable & even learned more & done better. Does that count for anything??? ;-)

    OK, some more:

    The Great Fitness Experiment:

    Before & After:

    Ryan D. Sullivan:

I know there are more but I get many via email so I have to go check my trash.... I hate to leave people out!

  45. - from weight loss tips to home workout plans, all for free and no products pushed :)

As for web development: what exactly are you looking for?

  46. I nominate A Weight Lifted and Feed Me, I'm Cranky. I like the different perspectives of the dietitians, pyschologists and fitness staff. I also really like Feed Me, I'm Cranky for Annabel's deeply personal and open journey. She inspires me.

  47. More great nominations, really appreciate these!

  48. I would like to nominate! This blog is great, not only for fitness instructions, but for general health and wellness ideas to improve your everyday life. I appreciate the detail behind each fitness exercise given, with directions on how to perform the exercise correctly and safely, and with pictures for visual guidance.

  49. The best is definitely Denny runs a great site with lots of practical advice. I've found it very useful.

  50. I read quite a few blogs but I have a few that I just love to pieces!, right now she's just blogging about vacation, but scan back to more typical posts about healthy weight loss, loving yourself and her awesome recipes for a more reflective view of what her blog normally is. posts the most awesome workouts! I think I must do one of hers at least once a week, love my peanut butter fingers workouts! duper vegan recipes! weight loss surgery success story, she is always pushing for awareness of obesity issues and the fact that surgery is not a "quick fix" like a lot of people think it is (me included).

    This is a great one!

  52. My favorite fitness blogs (not necessarily weight loss): (Cranky Fitness, of course) (The Great Fitness Experiment) (Truth 2 Being Fit) Banana Buzzbomb, my niece) (Nerd Fitness) (Mizfit Online) (Man Bicep) (Fitfluential) (Fit Mommy, a local blogger) (Kelly Olexa)

  53. I'm keeping up with dkfitsolutions these days. Following some of the simple solutions I've found on the blog, DK has me eating better and dropping pounds.
I'm excited to look down at the scale again.

  54. Ok, I'm going to nominate myself, because I think I'm pretty funny. You may not. I do include great photos, and plan to start updating again regularly...

  55. So sorry expat, your nomination came in after the deadline... I'd use my discretion and squeeze you in, but since there was nothing recent on your blog when I checked I'd rather wait until you start posting regularly again. When you do, please email me and I'll add you on, because you are indeed funny and I'd like you to be part of the list!

  56. lose weight? exercise and diet is the key

  57. Green Tea and Cinnamon works wonders for your weight loss plus its good for your skin also. I have been taking green tea a cinnamon past 1 year and I have lost 12 kgs so far with every day half hour of walking. I have also heard of salmons as good weight loss tool. Will try this out soon!!!
