Let's Hear it for Rationalization!

By Crabby McSlacker

So yeah, I didn't get around to writing a blog post this week, unless you want to try to count this one. Does it make sense that my turning 57 today somehow prevented me from posting something earlier in the week? No, it does not!

It also doesn't make sense that the passing of another year should grant me immunity from the effects of eating gratuitous Evil Things, or consuming potent beverages, or generally doing whatever the hell I want.

Don't f*ck with me on my birthday.

I get spoiled on my birthday, by my most awesome wife, who always makes it special. So special the holiday has been officially expanded to two days, and includes both a delicious home cooked meal as well as a dinner out at the restaurant of my choice.  Plus fun things to open.

Yet that doesn't stop me from spoiling myself, too. A massage. A stroll through town with perhaps a stop for coffee or lunch. Some window shopping... or perhaps I'll even make a purchase or two.

I do spend a little time reflecting on how lucky I am, and all the things I have to be grateful for, because I'm not a total idiot. But it's mostly about: the hell with responsibilities, what fun thing comes next?

Do I exercise on my birthday? Well, yeah, I'm weird enough that I wouldn't enjoy the day if I didn't do something, but I pick a favorite thing. Right now my favorite thing is to go for a run on a beautiful nearby trail, caffeinated up to the gills, blasting glorious energizing tunes at unsafe volume through my headphones.

(To each her own, you may be thinking.)

Some people would rather have a party.

Can you spot the Party Prankster? (Asshole.)

Some might prefer an outdoor cookout.

But what about you guys, what do you like to do on your birthday?  And do you use the occasion as an excuse for some creative rationalization?

  1. I completely lost interest in my birthday once I turned 21. I mostly spend the day reminding myself I need to fill in a different number on the demographics section of surveys.

    I know, I'm weird.

    1. Thanks so much Mary Anne! I must say you are far more grown up about it than I am!

    2. Never be grown up if you don't want to.
Remember, I work hard at clearing one day a week to be a Day of Rest, which means I don't have to go anywhere (you know that's one of my Life Goals) or do anything I don't want to. So I indulge myself 52 days a year, not just one.
You have never encountered orange chocolate cake? It is time to remedy this!

  2. Happy birthday Crabby!

I am not big on birthdays either, but my standing request is that we go out to dinner somewhere. I don't need (or want) a big party, I don't need gifts...I really just want a day off from washing dishes; it's one of those things that feels like a losing battle to me, and I get so very sick and tired of it.

    1. Oh my yes JavaChick, if there isn't one already, there should be a law banning the doing of dishes on ones birthday!

  3. Oh man. My birthday is right before Christmas, and so I'm usually so spent on "special occasions" and indulgent eating that doing something additional for my birthday is tiring. If I can, I do like to have the day off work, and with that free time I'll definitely use it as an excuse to do a nice workout. If I can have a day where I do whatever I feel like doing that day, I call it a victory!

  5. Happy birthday Crabby!! The last few years my birthday weekend has been ALL ABOUT ME. When I turned 40 I threw myself a huge party. The last couple years (and this one) we're planning a camping trip with a bunch of friends. As a kid, I always thought my birthday was a Big Deal. But that's because a cousin told me the fireworks were an early present. (My birthday is July 8.) :D I say do whatever makes you happy. It's your birthday after all and it only happens once a year.

  6. Happy Birthday, Crabby! My birthday is always an extravaganza of meals and other delights (no gifts, please). Last year I turned 50 at the ashram and chances are I will turn 51 exactly the same way!!!

  7. Happy birthday!!! Mine is tomorrow, and I'm turning 47. I keep always wanting to do cool stuff, but it often doesn't work out that way. As for this year, I am going to bake myself a kick-ass cake (orange chocolate!) and my partner is going to make his to-die-for french onion dip and we're going to make stuffed cheeseburgers. I had wanted to go out somewhere, but I guess that's going to happen.

Last year, the first thing I did was go for a run! This year, I'm not running on a regular basis anymore so I will either play tennis or go for a walk. :)

    1. HAPPY BIRTHDAY Amy!!!! (The one advantage of being late to my own post is that I can be timely on your special day).

But I had never even heard of orange chocolate cake or stuffed cheeseburgers before, you evil woman. Hope it's a wonderful day!

  8. Wishing you many happy returns of the day! Unfortunately on my birthday, my inner child and my inner tightwad fight, and the inner tightwad wins the most.

    1. Aw messymimi, you are always so mature about these things. My inner child is totally in charge, it just ties my inner tightwad to a chair for the duration and duct tapes it's mouth shut.

  12. Happy Belated Birthday!! I was a little put out at having to vacuum on my birthday, LOL, but I got over it and made the day fun and even though my husband gave me a couple gifts, I still shopped and bought what made me happy (old dirty clay pots - yes I am strange). I like that in my more mature years, I don't wait for stuff to happen, I just go for it.

  13. Happy Birthday! I always run on my Birthday too :)

  14. Happy belated birthday wishes to you! BTW - We are the same age, although I have about half a year on ya.
