Where the Heck is Crabby?

photo: wikipedia
This was supposed to be a cheerful, picture-filled, back-from-vacation post.  You know, craploads of castles and palaces and cobble-stoned streets, and the usual questionable food choices and tortured metaphors about health and fitness.

Unfortunately, while the trip was a blast, along the way my back took a turn for the worse. And then, once I got back, decided that one turn wasn't enough and took dizzying series of further turns for the far, far worse.  I tried to get up to make coffee this morning and had to abort, and ended up crawling back to bed, moaning in a most melodramatic and unbecoming way.

I have no idea what the fuck is going on and why it's not getting better.  I've been trying so hard to be careful!

A bulging or herniated disc seems pretty likely, but it has gone from there being certain moves I can't make comfortably, to there being no way to move at all without powerful drugs, some of which we happen to have in the form of expired prescriptions not originally written on my behalf. Tsk tsk, I know, that's illegal!

But take my advice: you know how they tell you always to be a good citizen and throw out your old prescriptions if you don't finish them? DON'T!!! Someday you may be really, really glad you didn't.

Anyway, I have a doctors appointment tomorrow where I hope to secure some fresh shiny perfectly legitimate drugs.  And hopefully get to a point where I can start physical therapy again.

Of course there's no reason on earth why I can't suffer and blog at the same time, right? Especially since the very theme of the blog is complaining about health-related matters. But I'm a wimp and just don't seem to have it in me.  Side effects of the drugs seem to include nausea, 3-hour long naps, and writers block.

However, when you least expect it, I'll be back!  Thank you all so much for your patience!

  3. Thanks so much you guys! This whole thing turned surreal this morning when I had to have The Lobster fetch me the walker I usually use for doing dips in the basement gym, in order to get to the bathroom--and I really didn't think I'd make it there and back. Until the vicodin kicked in, I couldn't move an inch without a cascade of painful paralyzing spasms.

On the bright side, I'm so lucky this got so much worse at home, rather than if it hit a week ago when I was all by myself in a budapest apartment speaking no hungarian and trying to figure out how to get drugs and get back on a plane and get home again!

With my wife being so awesomely supportive and taking care of me, and a friend who's had a similar thing helping with encouragement, and with you all to whine to, I know I'm actually pretty damn lucky.

But it's just weird that it keeps getting so much worse!

OK, wave of nausea, must go put head down...

  4. Oh, no - I'm so sorry that you are hurting so much and that the meds are just making you feel sick - no fun at all. (BTW - I always save pain meds even if they are Chris' - never know when Hydrocodone might be needed!!!)
I hope you can figure out what is causing this, get it fixed and get on with enjoying every second of life.
Glad you have such a great caretaker in Lobster!!!

  6. "Where the heck is Crabby?", is exactly what I said yesterday. Well, I am sorry to see you are having a craptastic time. It sounds like it really sucks, but hey…thank goodness for expired meds that belong to someone else.

So sorry to see you are in pain, and I hope you get some definitive news (and good drugs) at your appointment. Thinking good thoughts for you! No hugs until your back feels better!

  11. Take care of yourself, Crabby! Make the doctor(s) take you seriously until you get a diagnosis and a treatment plan. That's just a little friendly advice from the Back Pain Trenches.
Sending some positive thoughts your way!

  12. Unable to get up and get coffee? This is serious! Sending mental threats to your medical team now. They must Fix You!

  13. Argh, mega back pain sucks. I'm glad you made it home before that stomped you! Hang in there, and tell them you need a different type of drug. Vicodin makes a lot of people nauseous; they can give you something equally helpful without the hurling. Thinking good thoughts for you, Crabby! <3

  14. Oh man, Crabby. That stinks! Here's hoping it's a rest and recovery situation. Although...when my hubby went through something similar, surgery was the best thing ever. I'm not sure how much more of his whining I could take! ;) (But seriously...less than a month later we were gallivanting all over Italy and he had zero pain. And has stayed pain free in the 10 years since.)

  15. Dear Crabby - Crap! Crap!!! The ONLY silver lining is that this is the worst it will be (most likely) and relief is coming your way. I know it's hard to hang in there. The fact that you were able to post at all is sort of a little miracle, yes? So - go back to taking a break from all this and know we are all still out here and not ditching out on you - okay?

  16. Oh, no! Healing thoughts are heading your way - only wish I could be sure they'll be strong enough. Make those doctors work & get you back to normal Crabbiness.

  17. Oh that sucks! Feel better soon. I hope the doc gives you some good stuff and gets you up and going in no time.

  18. Really sorry to hear this - though glad you got back from your trip abroad before the pain and limitations hit you. Hoping you've got some good medical help and will soon be feeling better. I'm looking forward to hearing about your trip, including photos! Best wishes,

  19. OK, so you guys have some really powerful "get well" ju-ju, because I am doing SO MUCH BETTER today!

And, well, turns out the nauseating muscle relaxant/vicodin/ibuprofen combo worked some kinda miracle; woke up today in much less pain with much more mobility. Problem not completely solved, but the hopeful thing is that I continue to feel way better even now that the drugs have worn off. Not only can i get to the bathroom, I even went for a 30 minute walk and put on my own shoes!

I totally think you guys sending out good vibes may have been a big part of it!

  20. I'm so glad to hear you're feeling better. Nothing like getting knocked down by something so small you can't even see it to make you feel utterly insignificant in the grand scheme of things.

  26. A few weeks ago, My partner and i was discussing with a few guy freelance writers in regards to writing that had been put up by the on-line article advertising directory web page. It had been describing how to utilize articles producing layouts for many content notice viewers associated with a number of points. It had been branded the particular "Beware associated with This" web template.
