Weekend Workout!

photo: wikipedia

By Crabby McSlacker

This Friday's links have a workout theme!  Until they kinda don't anymore. But whatever. Consistency is not a strong point here in Crankyland.

Like last week, there will also be some more "blog chat" in which I yammer on about nothing in particular.

So are you all warmed up and ready to get crackin'?

Workin' It Weekend Links:

Flow Chart!
First up, are you having trouble even deciding on what sort of workout to do?  The Fit Bottomed Girls have a helpful flowchart to help you decide.

Note: You'll probably have better luck reading the fine print over at their site.

And speaking of the FBG's... they've got what looks to be a great new book coming out.  You can check it out and pre-order The Fit Bottomed Girls Anti-Diet book.... and even win cool stuff by spreading the word via their Anti-Diet challenge.

Star Wars!

Next up, over at Nerd Fitness you can find an awesome Star Wars Workout.

(photo: J. D. Hancock)

And it's not just an excuse for Star Wars Nerds to geek out over old cherished memories, it really does look to be a kick-ass routine with lots of options for beginners through hard-core fitness freaks.

Yummy!
For another butt-busting option, the most awesome Yum Yucky has a speed-rope and kettlebell workout that looks mighty fierce, and she is ALWAYS entertaining.  When you're done be sure to have a couple of Cake-Kabobs, you earned 'em.

And hanging out at Yum Yucky's has led me to become a stalker of Gigi Eats Celebrities! The two gals did a New Years Resolution video together and if you're not following both of 'em you better fix that ASAP.

Don't Neglect your Grip Strength and Digital Dexterity:

Finally, for a touchpad or mouse-based workout, if you're on a PC (may not work on tablets of phones), check out one of the suggestions mentioned on the video below. Google "Atari Breakout" then click on google images and... enjoy!  (And thanks, Midlife Mom!)

The Rambling Part

On Other People Being Assholes:  So I'm guessing you guys have already seen the rather amazing Beagle Sneakily Snarfing Up Chicken Nuggets video, as it made the Facebook rounds and is totally worth checking out:

But what got to me was: I first saw it via Gawker.  And I couldn't help but be horrified at the comments on the video.  Did they marvel at the awesomeness of the Clever Canine Conniving captured therein? No! Instead they made snarky remarks about the kitchen decor, the fact that people eat chicken nuggets, the placement of the microwave etc, etc.

This made me SO F--CKING GLAD that we have the nicest commenters on the planet here at Cranky Fitness! Mean people are just lame.

Coming Up... Not only are we endeavoring to feature The Least Sucky Guest Posts of Any Health and Fitness Blog Ever, we've got some great mini-interviews coming up. I'm planning to ask Three Annoying Questions to various bloggers I admire, and seriously, these are REALLY annoying. It will probably run every other Tuesday, but with my organizational abilities.... who knows?

Coming this week will be Charlotte of The Great Fitness Experiment--stay tuned!

Those of you who have blogs may have discovered that one huge hassle about getting outside submissions is the pain-in-the-ass reformatting that must take place. Were it not for Starving Bitch's behind the scenes heroics, I would be way too lazy to embark on expanding the posts here to include so many people other than myself, and we'd be sitting here twiddling our thumbs at once or twice a week again. So thanks, Starving Bitch!

And again, hats off to plucky Cranketeers who pop in to greet guests, to chat with each other, and to offer kind words.  I'm still reading and smiling at every comment, and replying to some as the spirit moves me.

Any thoughts? And what have y'all got on tap for this weekend?

  1. I'm so very happy to get more Cranky Fitness posts is a week. It's nice enough here these days I'm hoping husband and I get out to do some snowshoeing. There ya have it, a fitness connection in one of my comments wherein I actually (may) do something.

    1. Aw, thanks Leah, and yay for snowshoeing! Which is a funny looking word, isn't it? Make sure to take some photos!

  2. This morning I'm going to have to walk back from work in the snow (no way am I driving half a mile in this stuff!) to let the stove repairman in, at some point during my nine-to-twelve "appointment", which given the driving conditions today may not happen at all. Arrrgh! I want my broiler!
Other than that, my plans for the day are to keep warm.

  3. Yum-Yucky gave me some great new moves for jumping rope, thanks!

  4. Oh I thought you had given me the best present ever with that Star Wars workout. As a Star Wars (and Lego Star Wars) obsessed family, I thought it'd be PERFECT to get my kids to workout with me...alas I am disappointed it's not a video. The Angry Birds workout is also fun. I think I just found my 2nd favorite "fitness" site! :)

And thanks for the Google secrets too. Of course I tried them all and will be sharing with my coworkers for Friday distractions! This weekend? Hopefully NOT.MUCH. I have a lot of cleaning and working on the basement that needs to be done.

    1. You're right, it would be better as a video Bdaiss! And I say cleaning and chores call for a BIGTIME reward. :)

  5. I pre-ordered the FBG book last week! I'm looking forward to it.

  6. Once upon a time, I rode in the San Francisco to Los Angeles AIDS ride. It's a great event - a week of living in a (somewhat strenuous) utopian community where people who disagree on almost everything else treat each other with the greatest kindness and grace while supporting a common cause. And each of the rest stops is staffed with crazy-funny people who not only feed you, but entertain you. At one, a bunch of guys dressed as firefighters (minus shirts) and had their pictures posted all over the porta-potties. At another, all (gender irrelevant) dressed in wedding dresses. You get the idea.

So anyway, we approached San Miguel, closing in on the end of our third long day, only to be told that there was a grass fire, and we were not to leave the rest stop until the fire department was ready to give the road back. And the entertainment was...Richard Simmons look-alike-dress-alike-act-alikes. Phew. So hundreds of cyclists who were, y'know, tired already, got to sit at a California mission, of all places, watching a bunch of the support crew leap around and call out goofy encouragement while wearing exaggerated 80s-style workout clothes. Over and over. One of those days I never will forget.

As soon as I pulled up today's post, it all flashed in front of me again.

    1. OH. MY. I love this story. Love it.

    2. I bought in to the Richard Simmons stuff back in the 80's. I feel so dumb about it now. And have you seen him recently? I always think "creepy old man" when I see him. (shudder) And Grandma, you make me even more homesick for CA! Just talking about some of the amazing stories in and around the Bay area there makes me recall good times, good people, and an amazing life!

      Delete
    3. Aww, love these Richard Simmons and Bay Area memories and DRG, the image you conjured up of all those dancing Richards totally made me smile!

    4. Death Ride Grandma, there is one on the East Coast too. A friend participates in it and describes it very much the way you do. Since I ride a bike like an inebriated elephant, I offered to volunteer. She laughed sweetly but refrained from patting my head kindly. Apparently, volunteers who drive their vehicles have to sign up YEARS in advance, there are so many of them.
EVERY time I see Richard Simmons, I want to "dance to the oldies", which is a funny thing because I never actually had any of his videos. I did , however, do plenty of dancing to the oldies (60s-90s being called "the oldies"...sigh).
I continue to be glued to the TV, watching every minute of the Australian Open. Sam Stosur has the most bangin' body! She is my idea of the perfectly fit woman. Definition, strength and a nice, lean look. Any body type is fine with me but if I were to pick one for MYSELF, I'd choose hers. The fact that she is gracious and laid back and adorable is a bonus. ;) So, yeah, that's my weekend. OMG, in just a few weeks, the Olympics! My cup truly runneth over!

    5. The system ate the comma I could not possibly have neglected to include between *head* and *kindly* ;) and it ate the space between paragraphs . All other errors are the fault of the chicken nuggets swiping pup. All those warnings about breaded chicken by-products...see what happens one one ignores them?

    6. dlamb, you crack me up. As someone who litters my blogposts with typos, I find your attention to detail in the comments admirable if unnecessary!

And I'm loving all the Richard Simmons love, and OMG, yes, Sam does indeed have an eviable bangin' bod. I'm guessing, sadly, one has to exercise to acquire one like that? :(

    7. Crabby, you are the kindest person I know! Yeah, unfortunately, there is nothing like suffering (and I DO MEAN suffering) from a disability in which I am absolutely incapable of noticing my errors before I "publish" (and I use the term loosely) and also being unable to tolerate my own mistakes. The Universe probably has some special treats in store for you, for all the diplomatic deleting of the numerous statements indicating that "this post has been removed by author" or some such thing.
I don't know about you, but I'm totally assuming I will acquire Ms. Stosur's physique by osmosis. I watch a lot of The Big Bang Theory, so I know I can achieve this, through the magic of TV!

  8. I can't wait to show the Star Wars workout to my boys!!!
This whole new multiple days of blogging over here is awesome!!!

  9. Man I want to try out that Jedi workout :)

  10. Being a super-nerd I checked out the Star Wars workout and I have a beef or maybe a Jawa with it. How come the only exercises I am good at are called the Jabba the Hut and the Chewbacca? In order to be a Jedi I have to stand on my head? I'm turning to the dark side!

    1. Too funny Cindy, I did not notice that upside downness was a prerequisite for being a Jedi!

  11. All this time I have greatly underestimated the Beagle jumping ability. I was dumb-founded. It is amazing that it is Friday and I have no idea what my weekend will bring. :)

  12. Yeah it wasn't as easy to read on their site either, I was starting to think I might need to get my eyes checked. The anonymity of the internet and people get the balls the size of basketballs in making rude comments.

    ReplyDelete
  13. Oh and you should warn a bitch when you put up a picture of Richard as I spit water all over my laptop. If it starts smoking I'm sending you the bill.

  14. I am enjoying your recent prolific-er postings. :) People who leave crappy comments are crappy people with no lives. I love the commenters on this list. It is such a cool bunch! I can't tell you how many bloggers that I've signed up to get their postings. It is my favorite way to keep up to speed on 'things' in the healthy living lifestyle stuff.

  16. I L-O-V-E Richard Simmons! Wheeee! The dog was hilarious...what a clever beagle! I am really looking forward to the three annoying questions...should be a fun read. This weekend is looking like school work, school work and more school work! More whheeeee!

  17. School work, chores, you guys all sound so virtuous!

Isn't anyone gonna go out and eat a bountiful feast of overpriced gourmet delicacies or pound down tequila shots or take exotic illegal substances or dance on tabletops or get into barroom brawls or wake up with some skeezy stranger in a funky part of town with no memory of how you got there?

I was thinking of doing all that myself but its kinda hard with an 8:30 bedtime...

    1. Oh, that's *next* weekend, Cranky! ;-)

Funny, I don't think the Fit Bottom Girls chart had a lounge-about-and-eat-4-ingredient-peanut-butter-cookies option...I've been doing it ALL wrong!

I haven't commented in awhile, but so glad to see you blogging again! Thanks for stopping by mine the other day - I hope you do get to FitBloggin' one of these days, you'd love it!

    2. Thanks Pubsgal, and yeah, I think the FBG's missed the boat on that one!

Have pretty much decided that barring unforseen events between now and sign up time, I am GOING this year to FitBloggin!
