Welcome to Cranky Fitness!

Yep, it's true we are no longer publishing health and fitness posts on a regular basis, but please check back for occasional updates. You can also catch Crabby McSlacker wasting time on Twitter, or can visit the blogs of former Cranky Fitness co-bloggers Merry, Gigi, Jo, and Jo again.

But don't go yet, there's still plenty of Cranky to be had right here!

Check out our Ginormous Archives. Did you know there are almost 1,000 posts in there? Holy crap, that's a lot of verbiage. It would be a shame to see all those nouns and adjectives and prepositions go to waste.

Browse Cranky Fitness By Topic:

As you may notice on the top of the left sidebar, there are pages dedicated to particular subjects, such as Eating Right or Working Out.

But There are Other Ways to Explore, Too

If you are a fan of chronological order, you can expand the Blog Archive widget in the left sidebar and view posts that way. Alternatively, if you prefer a random approach, we also have a Random Post widget in the right sidebar, called "What the Heck." Or finally, you can search the entire blog for words of your choice. At the very, very top of the page on the left side there is a tiny little search bar.

Important Note: We do not claim to be health experts and are not offering medical advice. Consult your doctor before doing anything that might affect your health!

Thanks So Much For Stopping By!

Help us spread the Crankiness!

  • Wow! I feel all warm and welcomed. Love the arch!

  • I've missed you!

I will be coming back to visit and read old posts whenever I need a dose of Crabby wisdom.

  • I look forward to checking it out. All is right in the world, again. :)

  • I have promised myself to come browse old posts, just for a taste of crankyness (crankiness? no, spellchecker, I mean Cranky-ness) but I haven't, and now I have several methods to choose from.

  • It's good to see you again.

  • I keep clicking on the Drugs, Sex, and Rock&Roll and nothing happens.... I was hoping there would something to explain how you get THERE from "Fitness" and "Diet."

It's just bait for Google searches, isn't it. Sigh.

  • Great to see you guys!

So I'm still in the process of gathering posts and compiling index pages--Drugs Sex & Rock n' Roll will indeed be coming, one of these days. Thanks for hanging in there.

  • Wow! You've really been working at this blog. I know you said that you were going to re-organise things, but I didn't think you'd start this soon. Maybe you have withdrawl symptoms from the blog?

I love the way you've organised things - it's really clear and easy to follow. And well done on over 1000 posts! That's heaps!

  • love the name of your blog, lots of great advice too

  • ** Waves at Crabby! **

Look at you, getting all organized! :)

  • This is why I come here; it's the only fitness/weightloss blog I have found with a tag for "Cow abductions." And now all nicely collated in one place!

    Now, on to the Rock&Roll....

  • I always meant to ask, are the Lobster and Crab nicknames from the old Smothers Brothers song the Ballad of the Lobster and the Crab?

That song always made me sad when I was small, to think they could never get together because "lobsters walk straight," ha ha. It would be very gratifying to find there was a coda where they finally made it in the end.

Maybe you need to write one more entry for the young 'uns. And it has to have a YouTube video.

    Pretty please?

  • Why did you quit posting? It's a good blog. If you ever want to guest post stop by. Fitness Achievement

  • This is a great looking site. I'm a little sad that I missed the whole era but, just like HBO on demand, I get to enjoy all of the information you've posted over the years.

  • Just checked back in today after a long absence away and am sad to hear you've stopped posting.
Enjoy your break and hope to hear from you guys again soon.

  • Wait... wait... why the big "Welcome" sign above the "we ain't postin' no mo'" line?

  • Here I explore all of your brilliant article.
Thank you for the learning indirectly that I got from your site.

  • I have been getting cranky in my workout sessions lately, and then i found this site, Body Betrayal.com and found humor in women having the same issues as me. It says there is a reveal on May 17th, so I am waiting to see if they have a remedy for some problem areas!

  • great to see you backkkk on such a great blog!

  • The key is telling your body there won’t be any more famines. There are two primary ways of doing this:

    1. Eat real food. When you’re eating quality food and it’s assimilated efficiently, the body begins to receive what it needs to function at its best. This is one very important step in turning off the famine response. The presence of nutrient-dense food in the diet signals to the body that there is plenty of food available and there’s no need to pile on fat stores. Digestion is also an important part of this equation because you want to make sure the real food you eat is assimilated properly. Including raw and cultured foods in your diet on a regular basis can improve your digestive health and ensure you’re getting the most out of your food.

    2. Reduce stress. Another folly of modern society is the intense level of stress most of us are exposed to, often since very early childhood. Stress induces the famine response as much as dieting. After all, the body doesn’t distinguish between types of stresses; the same biochemical reactions occur whether you’re stressed by your work, a difficult marriage, lack of real food, poor sleep habits or any number of stressors. So it’s very important to address this and take the appropriate steps to reducing and managing the stress in your life. Read more about the stress connection to weight loss here and here and here.

Without addressing these two components, a healthy body composition is virtually impossible to achieve. Plus, healthy food choices reduce stress, and reducing stress makes it easier to choose healthier food. So making one small change at a time really can add up, and the right choices will come more naturally over time. Granted, this involves patience and won’t produce results like "Lose 10 pounds in one week!" But it will set you on the path to lasting health.

  • Best Training Strategies

If you ever been to a doctor, the first thing they do is convince you to do low to moderate intensity aerobic training. This is also referred to as cardio. They suggest you do about 30-60 minutes of steady pace cardio for about 3-5 times in a week. They claim this helps maintain your heart rate at a moderate level.
Before you get involved in such a routine, consider some recent scientific research that gives concrete facts to prove such cardio workouts may not work that well after all.

Our bodies were designed to perform physical activity in bursts of exertion followed by recovery. According to the research study, physical variety is a key variable in your training. If you examine most sports, you will find that most of them go with this burst of exertion, or stop-and-go movement, as it is also called.

Another factor to keep in mind when it comes to varying your physical workouts is the effects to your body internally.

Scientists have known for years that any excessive steady state endurance exercise that is anywhere between 30 minutes to an hour, only trains the heart rate at a specific level. You don’t get the heart fully involved.

This kind of workout causes muscle wasting, and can even create a condition in your body that can lead to chronic diseases. But if you do stop-and-go type movements, you will find that your body reacts to it in a better manner. Your body will be able to increase anti-oxidant production. Your body will also provide a more anti-inflammatory affect and your metabolic rate will increase. Also, stop-and-go training trains the heart to respond to and recover from a variety of demands and stress levels.

This is what you need. The kind of exercise that trains your heart to rapidly increase and rapidly decrease is the condition that will benefit you more fully. And it has another benefit. It is much more interesting to do and has a better success rate. This means those who used this method, did not drop out.
